Grapes grown in the fog - hence, probably, the name - Nebbiolo found its home first in Valtellina, upper Lombardy, then among the splendid woods of northern Piedmont, towards Gattinara, and finally in the Langhe. Rustic and mountainy in Valtellina, thin and mineral in upper Piedmont, in Langa, Nebbiolo explodes to its peak of complexity, richness and longevity.
Of course, due to the World Heritage Site terroir, which needs no introduction. But also, even in areas where the exposure is sunny and the soil naturally suited to large reds, its stubborn conservation of that softness of structure and incisiveness of tannins which constitute at the same time rusticity and nobility. The moody but infinitely multifaceted character of a heritage destined for aging like few other wines in the world.
Certified in the Langhe area since the fifteenth century, Nebbiolo is above all a great wine even when young. Nervous? Yes, but for this reason it is exceptional. Fruity, agile, dynamic, with exuberant freshness and indomitable tannins. This is the character of the Langhe Nebbiolo: a dynamic and easy-to-drink type, even when a touch of wood blunts its youthful excesses.
But now, take the same Nebbiolo, take it from the best vineyards, leave it in large barrels for two, three, four years... and you will get the pride of the Langhe: the regal, clear, sumptuous Barolo, the subtle, rugged, emotional Barbaresco. Such long-lived wines to leave in the cellar for a continuous, moving goodbye.

Red. Giuseppe Cortese Langhe, Italy Nebbiolo
Bottle: 13.02 € club members / 14.90 € non-members
The Giuseppe Cortese Nebbiolo is obtained from the younger vines (between 15 and 20 years old) grown in the Rabajà vineyard, which the winery also uses for producing its renowned Barbaresco. In the making of this fine-structured red, there is clear evidence of very high quality grapes, originating from one of the most esteemed parts of the Langhe region, that undergo an ageing period of 12 months in oak barrels of different sizes, from 17 to 25 hectolitres, using new and those aged up to 9 years old.
On the nose we can appreciate aromas of forest fruits and violets, enhanced by touches of rhubarb, liquorice and other milder spices. The fruit quality is first-rate and complemented by considerate usage of oak, which succeeds in establishing a bouquet that's easy, immediate, refined and delightful. Classic in flavour, it appears warm, tannic and persistent on the palate. We can recognise in this Nebbiolo from Giuseppe Cortese a wine of great intensity and delicacy, an excellent accomplishment that brings out the best from this magnificent terroir and its vineyards.

Red. Cantina del Glicine Barbaresco, Italy Nebbiolo
Bottle: 19.80 € club members / 22.50 € non-members
Traditional, with sustainable viticulture and ageing in large oak barrels, the Barbarescos from Glicine are based on a style that is not opulent, but subtle and elegant, with limited extractions and toasting which is never excessive. The wines are approachable, of an agile and dynamic drink, but above all of an absolute adherence to the variety, Nebbiolo, and to the original terroir of Neive.
Vignesparse is the traditional Barbaresco from Neive, deriving from various plots: Gallina, Serredella and Serraboella, which are well-known and high quality crus in the area. Bright ruby red tending to orange over time. It has an ethereal and composite nose, with puffs of liquorice, wild rose, violet. Dry, caressing, peaceful, very elegant, prone to softness considering the type. It matures in traditional Slavonian oak barrels, as per tradition, for at least three years.

Red. Marziano Abbona Barolo, Italy Nebbiolo
Bottle: 25.08 € club members / 28.50 € non-members
Like every great winemaker in the Langhe, however, Marziano Abbona wanted to compete with the legendary Nebbiolo challenge and, needless to say, his Barolos soon became some of the best in the denomination. The style is multi-faceted, because it plays on the perfect balance between the typical verticality of the variety and a touch of velvet imbibed by the smart but never invasive vinifications.
Vintage Barolo is the litmus test of the success of this operation. Thin, fine but at the same time crispy and juicy. Made from grapes from Perno, a small hamlet between Monforte and Serralunga d’Alba, it is a wine with great olfactory finesse, power and excellent alcohol content. Using only native yeasts, it has a vivid ruby colour with splendid garnet touches. On the nose it is floral, fruity and with a beautiful spicy and toasted quality, with clear ethereal hints as it ages. On the palate it is full, elegant, persistent, dynamic.
