The wine

The history of Marsala begins with John Woodhouse, an English trader who arrived in Sicily in 1773 to start a flourishing trade in almonds, honey, oil and tuna with the motherland. A storm forced his ship, the English brig "Elizabeth", to find refuge in the port of Marsala. Here he was struck by the goodness of the perpetuum, a wine of high alcohol content produced by local farmers, similar to Porto and Madeira, so much so that he wanted to export it to England. To prevent the wine from spoiling during the long sea voyage, he increased the alcohol content by adding a little wine spirit. And this is how the first Marsala wine was born.

Pellegrino dedicates the label Old John, Marsala Superiore Riserva Ambra Semisecco to the farsighted and innovative English merchant. From grillo, catarratto and inzolia grapes, grown in the hinterland of Marsala and Mazara del Vallo, intriguing for its intense amber color, it is a versatile wine, with pleasant notes of apricot and carob, and slight hints of thyme and black pepper.
